@billcorbett.bsky.social I think when the average person watches a politician always being quiet and not hitting back when someone insults and spreads grotesque lies about them, they think “this is a coward who won’t fight for me.” And / or “well, they’re not fighting this, maybe there’s something to the [false] charges.”
