This is my personal blog where I like to blog about technology and other interesting stuff in life.

Often you hear in any organization, “That’s not my job.”  I have always wondered why people are so quick to jump to this conclusion.  I actually thought that these people (AKA Legacy people) were just being lazy, however, I don’t think that is the case anymore.  Well maybe I still think that a little, but more so I think that they are covering there own ass.  in one of my sessions yesterday we discussed Isolation vs Integration.  By following strict job descriptions you can’t be blamed when something goes wrong.  Below is an image that I attempted to replicate from Christopher Avery.  These pillars, if you will, are people’s jobs and the black dots are issues that arise.  (I only had MS Paint available to do this.)  By isolating ourselves it leaves cracks for problems and then no one is being held accountable or taking responsibility.

The next image is one I came up with and drew myself.  It illustrates integration and problems.  The dark red is the overlap between job roles and again the black dots are the problems.  Notice that now if there is a problem, and there will be, someone will have to be held accountable.  It also might be possible that multiple people will.  This image also illustrates “I have your back” and “You have my back.”  Sure the there will still be problems however if they can fall in peoples domains we can prevent them from happening again.  If we stick to isolation the problems will remain in the cracks and they will still happen time after time again.  Sorry for the poor imagery, but I think you get the point.  :)
